Here are some more looks from my senior thesis collection, Duality.

To reinforce this dualistic theme, I wanted to create strikingly different textural qualities in juxtaposition to one another. I wanted to include both structured and soft draping. The hard lines and sharp points of my outerwear pieces are mixed with light and airy evening wear gown silhouettes and roughly textured fabric manipulations. I also connected my idea of duality with nature because of its ability to grow in the midst of darkness, which is why there are flower and branch motifs seen throughout the collection.🥀

This is a small peek into my research development for the overall aesthetic of my thesis. During the early stages of creating this collection, it was especially important to me to make use of all my abilities as a designer in order to truly capture the mood of my work. These images are right out of my journal, which includes my drawings, fabric manipulations, texture ideas, and design inspiration that I feel perfectly fit the direction I want to go in for my overarching theme.

The theme of my thesis is Duality—the concept that everything surrounding us is made of two opposing forces that harmoniously unify in order to create the ever-changing course of life. For example, happiness cannot exist without sadness, good cannot exist without evil, and light cannot exist without darkness. Although we all have trouble accepting the wickedness of the world, duality shows us that this darkness has the power to guide us to the beauty of life. And not only can it be a vital pathway to healing, but to living a more fulfilling life.

I wanted to make this the theme of my senior thesis because it was the darkness in my life that led me to my love for art and fashion. This theme was also very fitting for the circumstances I was under while finishing up thesis in my last semester. Although I initially had trouble coping with “the new normal,” working on thesis offered stability during an overwhelming time and motivated me to create something beautiful out of a difficult situation.

Antoni Gaudi’s work rarely exhibited straight lines or geometry. He was often called God’s Architect because his deep devotion to God was the reason all of his works were inspired by nature. Gaudi saw the beauty of nature as God’s masterpiece and felt it was important to emulate the natural world in his art. Gaudi once said, “Originality is returning to the origin.” Nowhere is this connection more clearly visible than in his architecture.🌾

Before my senior year at FIT, I never really understood the allure of lingerie. Not only is it an area of fashion that still strikes up controversy, but it is an area of fashion that many believe is much simpler due to the little amount of fabric it requires. After being able to delve into the art of lingerie for a full semester, I learned to truly appreciate the rigorous and luxurious craft. There is so much time, effort and technical skill that goes into such a small and delicate garment.

Before my senior year at FIT, I never really understood the allure of lingerie.
